Re: County: lack of outreach on e-voting issues
Paul-
CVV has absolutely not been attacking the advisory committee, and I
believe that our press release today, despite its "victorious" tone,
actually takes special efforts to thank the Elections folks and commend
their position. And I believe that next to the term "paper ballots" I
think I probably said "thank you" second most today at the meeting.
Also, it appears as if CVV and the County Clerk's Elections office will
be trying to work together to some degree to deal with the issue of the
Colorado Recount Law, and how to get more volunteers and workers for
the 2004 election. I hope that speaks volumes to our desire to approach
this issue from a spirit of cooperation between the Elections staff and
this Citizen's group for the primary benefit of all voters and
citizens.
I'm not sure I understand your rationale for the public nature of any
of these e-mails, but because of it, I feel it is important to make
sure that CVV is not misrepresented, either. I'm not sure that you are
necessarily saying below that these negative attitudes and factual
errors are somehow the positions or statements of our group, but I want
to make sure it is clear that is not the case.
For the record, and especially today, CVV is extremely grateful to the
County Clerk's office and the Citizen's Committee for their work and of
course their conclusions. Speaking only for myself, I can also say that
I have learned a tremendous amount about the election process, and I
agree, as I stated at the meeting today, that most voters probably
think only of their brief experience on voting day (or their wait in
line, perhaps) and rarely if ever consider all the logistical effort
that goes into an election, from how many ballots to order to L&A tests
to how heavy the machines are.
I hope that it is absolutely clear to everyone that CVV absolutely
supports the efforts of Boulder County Elections Staff to own and
operate the best possible election system for the citizens of Boulder
County.
I certainly hope this helps put this matter to rest.

ya think that I should have sent this to Doug as private? No. it was
public for a reason.
Some people here have been attacking the advisory committee and the
folks at the county openly. I keep hearing how they are NOT CITIZENS.
The people seated on both sides of me today were polling judges, but
someone in the room later told me that I was sitting between two town
clerks. Your facts about who has been serving on this committe suck.
Since when do people that work in government suddenly lose their
citizenship or ability to have brain functions, because they do?
Everyone there was concerned about the issues. Most were not
government lackies as has been repeatedly proported.
I guess I must be a government lackie as well. I have no ability to
think independently, just like all the others. Only members of this
group know what is best, and everyone else is an imbicile.
So Doug is involved. That's nice. So what? Why bash people that are
actually working hard to make elections happen. They've worked a hell
of a lot harder than you or I and you bash them.
And you point in bashing them would be ... to make you feel better
about yourself. Go fish!

Before this gets out of hand, for the record, Doug has been an active
contributor to CVV and has worked to increase press and citizen
awareness of this issue for at least as long as I've been involved,
as I met him at the County's weekend citizen review test drive months
ago.
Although I appreciate that Paul T. may react strongly to criticism of
County election workers (since he is one, or has been one), I think
it is completely out of line for one member of our group to attack
another or accuse them of not doing enough on this issue.
I want to make sure that every citizen is involved in this process,
and so we need to encourage participation, not discourage it.
I would like to ask everyone to please be extra mindful and
respectful of everyone's "equality in concern" regarding this issue.
Let's not lose our positive momentum to internal conflict.
Thank you!
