Verified Voting
I am forwarding this message to all concerned in the LP. In 2003 the LPCO
board voted a resolution to support Voter Verifiable Paper Ballots. While
the newly mandated electronic voting methods (forced upon us by the Bush
administration) must be employed in many counties across the country, there
has been and still is consternation concerning what is to be counted.
Many opponents and even some proponents of electronic voting devices contend
that only paper ballots produced by these voting devices should be counted.
However, most of the industry that manufactures these devices claim that a
paper ballot is unnecessary.
The election year has begun in earnest. If you love Liberty and Freedom, you
had better get involved or kiss it goodbye.
The Libertarian Party at all levels has unanimously agreed that Voter
Verifiable Paper Ballots are necessary for fair and quantifiable elections.

We are contacting you because you endorsed our Open Letter to the House
Administration Committee, urging the committee to release H.R.2239 to the
floor and support its passage.

It is crucial to get co-sponsors immediately for S.1980, Graham's companion
bill in the Senate. Here's why. There are two other voting bills before the
Senate, and neither Clinton's nor Boxer's will give us a paper-trail by
November. Friendly legislators tell us that H.R.2239 is not likely to see
much progress until the Representatives know which bill will emerge in the
Senate.
Accordingly, we are launching a campaign to have thousands of people call
their Senators, urging them to co-sponsor. As part of the campaign, we are
now preparing to print the Open Letter, along with the list of endorsers,
and mail it to the appropriate committees in both houses of Congress, with
copies also to Senator Bob Graham and Representative Rush Holt.
You can help with this campaign in two ways:
1) Contact your Senators and encourage them to sign on to Graham's bill -
S.1980. Go here for guidelines: http://tinyurl.com/2xtpa
2) Make a donation to VerifiedVoting.org and help with the costs of the

Ask the voters in Fairfax County, Virginia whose voting machines subtracted
one in every hundred votes for the candidate who lost her seat on the School
Board in November 2003. Ask the many Broward County, Florida voters who said
in a 2003 poll they were ''not confident at all'' that the electronic system
would accurately tally their votes. Ask the 436 citizens of Wake County,
North Carolina whose votes were lost by flawed firmware in the November 2002
election.
