Dear CFVI Member:

UPDATE: SB05-079 MITCHELL/MADDEN BILL hearing has been moved: it will be heard in committee on Thursday, FEBR. 17TH (Time and Room to be determined).

URGENT ACTION ALERT

PLEASE CALL AND WRITE YOUR LEGISLATORS IN SUPPORT OF PAPER BALLOTS.

SB05-079 MITCHELL/MADDEN BILL will be heard in committee on Thursday, FEBR. 17TH AT ????. Room ????, State Capitol.

Come to the hearing and show your support.

While there are problems with this bill, it is a giant step forward.

CFVI recommends the following changes:

1.	Recounts should be done by hand and should be recounts of paper ballots. Paper ballots should be the final authority in any election.
2.	Audits need to be > 2% of ballots cast, and there should be public oversight of all aspects of the audit.
3.	Bill should take effect in 2006 not 2007.
4.	Source code for computer programs should be open for public inspection by computer software engineers and compiled in their presence.
5.	Voting machines, scanners and tabulators should never be connected electronically by internet or modems.

The Senators on the Senate Local Government Committee are:
1.	Deanna Hanna, Chair. 303-866-4857 ( deanna.hanna.senate@xxxxxxxxxxx )
2.	Peter Groff, Vice-Chair. 303-866-4864 ( peter.groff.senate@xxxxxxxxxxx)

Please call or write these Senators because if this bill doesn't make it out of this committee, it will die. When the bill passes committee it will go on, and we will advise you of next steps to take. There is also other proposed legislation.
