[CFVI News] Discussion on Vote Centers: Tuesday 3/1/05, 7pm Kimball Hall, 700 E. 24th Ave, Denver
Dear CFVI Member:
CFVI is working closely with Common Cause in joint efforts to bring about Voting Reform in Colorado.
Here is Common Causes' letter about the meeting tomorrow evening:
Discussion on Vote Centers: Tuesday 3/1/05, 7pm Kimball Hall, 700 E. 24th Ave, Denver.
As we address election reform in Colorado, state officials are looking at ways to make elections more efficient and more convenient. One means to do this is a concept called Vote Centers. Vote Centers will do away with voting at one specific precinct locations and instead allow voters to cast their ballot at any designated location within their county. In the 2004 election, Larimer County in Colorado used Vote Centers with great success. At the first Blue Ribbon Election Panel, established by Colorado's Secretary of State, the Vote Center concept was presented as a meaningful solution to poll location problems in Colorado. Since then, many Colorado counties are discussing Vote Centers.
While we hope to have the opportunity to work around the state on this issue, we have a great opportunity to start the community conversation next week in Denver.
Tomorrow, on March 1st, Colorado Common Cause ( http://www.commoncause.org/colorado ) and the African American Voter Information Project invite you to a discussion in Denver on Vote Centers to learn how Denver plans to implement this concept in 2005. As we understand, Denver will test the concept by using early voting sites as "Vote Centers" on Election Day in May, while local precincts will still be available. In November 2005, Denver hopes to fully implement Vote Centers.
Join us to learn more about Vote Centers, how it will work, where the voting locations may be and how this may affect you. Please join us for a panel discussion with civic, political and community leaders.
The event location is Kimball Hall, 700 E. 24th Ave (at 24th and Washington) and will run from 6:00pm-7:30pm.
Scheduled to be on the panel are:
Elbra Wedgeworth, President, Denver City Council
Karon Majeel Hatchett, Executive Director, Denver Election Commission
Cathryn Hazouri, Executive Director, ACLU-CO
Even if you are not able to meet us next week in Denver, keep an eye out for Vote Centers coming to your county in the near future.
We will keep you updated as further developments unfold in our campaign for election reform ( http://www.commonblog.com/story/2005/1/25/173430/017 ). Meanwhile, echoing Chellie's emails from last week, we want to keep hearing from you. Make sure to post your questions, comments, and suggestions on our blog ( http://www.commonblog.com/ ). Your feedback will enable us to better focus our advocacy efforts in Colorado.
Thank you for your continued interest and for all you do for Colorado Common Cause.
