DENVER -- Secretary of State Donetta Davidson will be nominated to
serve on the federal Election Assistance Commission, the White House
announced Thursday, opening up the possibility that Gov. Bill Owens
will have another executive position to fill.
"President Bush could not have made a better choice than Donetta
Davidson. She is the person for the right job at the right time. I
anticipate swift confirmation of her nomination. Colorado's loss will
be America's gain," Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Colo., said in a statement.
Secretary of State Donetta Davidson will work for the federal
Election Assistance Commission.
Davidson, a Republican who would have to resign her post to accept
the position, was out of state and unavailable for comment, a
spokeswoman said.
The commission sets guidelines and standards for states trying to
implement the federal Help America Vote Act.
Davidson said previously that she would not resign her state post
until she is offered the job and gets Senate confirmation.
Davidson, who is term-limited, said her experience helping counties
implement federal rules imposed after problems with the 2000
presidential election were a major factor in her being considered for
the post.
"We are ahead of a lot of other states on this issue," Davidson said.
A statement from the White House said Davidson, who is currently
vice chair for the National Association for Secretaries of State,
would be nominated for the remainder of a four-year term expiring
Dec. 12, 2007.

"President Bush has made a wise choice with his nomination of
Donetta Davidson. She has done a terrific job in her service to the
people of Colorado and I have no doubt she will be a tremendous asset
to our nation's Election Assistance Commission. We had recommended
Donetta for this federal appointment and I am pleased to learn she
has been nominated," Owens said.
