Alternative to DREs for all

Dear Secretary Dennis,

As you no doubt remember, I attended the May hearing concerning the
complaint against the use of DREs in the 2006 Colorado elections. I
write now to encourage you to adopt Al Kolwicz's "eight-point
alternative" as a reasonable compromise that allows blind people to cast
their ballots independently (even though they cannot verify the paper
trail) but that does not open up the DRE can of worms to the entire
populace.

I continue to hope for a better solution that allows all people to vote
independently and verify their votes on a paper ballot. The VotePAD
accomplishes this feat for blind people and for many disabled people,
though not all. We voters are faced with no good choices that guarantee
that all votes are cast independently on verifiable paper ballots. The
eight-point compromise, while not perfect, offers a solution for 2006.
