In Texas, election officials recounted ballots after a computer glitch
incorrectly showed longshot Constitution party candidate Ron Avery ahead
by a large margin in the race for a House of Representatives seat. The
winner was really Democratic incumbent Henry Cuellar.

In Hidalgo County, election officials had no problems with a paperless
ballot until the software began tabulating the results. Votes for U.S.
House District 28 had to be manually tallied after officials suspected
irregularities in the electronic results.
Questions surfaced after early returns showed Constitution party
candidate Ron Avery, an unlikely longshot in the race, leading
Democratic incumbent and eventual winner Henry Cuellar by a wide margin.
The problem stemmed from the software used to compute the ballots, said
Ken Fields, spokesman for Election Systems and Software, which
manufactures the machines. He said votes were recorded correctly and
that the congressional race was the only one affected.
