Re: CA Voting System Review notes
Thanks Joe,
I shouldn't have waited till this morning to do it but I called Secretary of
State Brown in California to ask her to do the right thing. Her staff said
they'd like it in writing and asked that I email my message. I sent this
to votingsystems@xxxxxxxxxx:
Dear Secretary of State Brown,
I plead with you to remove the voting machines - both DREs and optical
scanners - from California's voting system. You have the opportunity to
eliminate these systems that have been proven to be so hackable and prone to
corruption. In addition, you have a huge chance to strike out against the
privatization of our voting system.
It is truly in your power to choose democracy over a corporate-controlled
voting process where local communities have no control. As Canada and most
countries demonstrate, locally controlled paper ballot systems work quite
well; where problems exist, solutions are easily accomplished. By contrast,
problems with our new electronic systems are numerous and gargantuan.
Thanks for you consideration,
Bruce Robinson

Subject: CA Voting System Review notes
"I was especially struck by the utter banality of most of the flaws.
Exploitable vulnerabilities arose not so much from esoteric weaknesses
that taxed our ingenuity, but rather from the garden- variety design and
implementation blunders that plague any system not built with security as
a central requirement. There was a pervasive lack of good security
engineering across all three systems, and I'm at a loss to explain how
any of them survived whatever process certified them as secure in the
first place. Our hard work notwithstanding, unearthing exploitable
deficiencies was surprisingly -- and disturbingly -- easy."
