Hi All,
SB08-240, "Change Voter Registration Record Online" passed the 3rd reading in the Senate today, and is scheduled for the House State...Affairs Committee Thursday, May 1st, "Upon recess", in room 0112. It is the third bill listed.
The fourth bill listed is another bill of interest: SB08-243 "Election Reform Commission", sponsored in the House by Morgan Carroll.
I hope people will come to this committee meeting.
We should strongly protest SB240 because online voter registration (as with online voting)cannot be made secure in the foreseeable future, according to leading computer scientists. Gordon does not understand this yet, and is doing this to help get young people to register.
Discussion in the Senate has been dominated by the Republicans wanting IDs because they are concerned that people ineligible to vote will register. Mitchell led the fight. So Gordon has made resistance to the bill a Republican thing, saying there was no evidence that illegals will try to vote. He referred to opinions to the contrary as "paranoid delusions".
This obscures all the ways eligible voters could be disenfranchised with online voting. More on this later...
As for SB 243, I am assuming we wish to support this. Let me know if anyone thinks otherwise. This bill seems to have come out of the Governor's office. No surprise there.
Cheers,
Margit
