Fwd: A Victory to Announce re internet voting]

With the close of the 2010 legislative session, Washington State's effort to pass a dangerous online voting bill, HB 2483 has been defeated!

Many thanks go out to Senator Eric Oemig for his tireless advocacy to protect the votes of military and overseas voters and the integrity of elections in Washington! We would also like to thank Kelly Reese, the attorney working with us in Washington State for her tireless commitment to educating key policy makers on this issue. And thanks to all of YOU in Washington State, across the country and from abroad for contacting your legislators, blogging and speaking out against internet voting!

HB 2483 would have permitted military and overseas voters to fax and email voted ballots, without paper back up, putting our military and overseas voters ballots at risk as well as seriously undermining the security of our elections.  Top experts in cybersecurity are agreed that online voting is fundamentally insecure and an actual risk to national security.

But we can't rest on our laurels now, for the idea of online voting remains very popular and the risks and ramifications are still widely misunderstood. Although we all wish we could implement online voting securely, the technology is just not there yet.  As the New York Times editorial on the issue said, internet voting is "still in beta."  Beta, or a testing phase, is not good enough for our elections or acceptable for protecting the votes of our military.

If internet, email or fax voting has been introduced in your state, please visit www.voteraction.org to download resources on how to build a similar effort and replicate this success. As always, please feel free to contact us at Voter Action for more resources.

Sincerely,

The Voter Action Team
