Hi All,
I was in the Senate gallery when HB1219 UMOVA passed a short while ago. There was an amendment that restricted use of email return of voted ballots (when no more secure means were available or feasible) to only absent military (those out of their home state). So that helps a little. It was hard to hear, even for people who don't have my hearing problems. (Lots of school kids around, and Sen. Newell asked for more quiet.) I didn't get much after that. Senator Heath had some sort of amendment, but I couldn't hear what it was. So there is still some mystery about the final language.
Thanks very much to those who got a message out to their Senators.
If we look at this as an educational process, we have probably made some progress, with a few legislators, if not with the SOS's office..
Maybe there is a way to challenge the pilot project on internet voting run by the DOD in REAL ELECTIONS, which the state has signed up for.
And on the mail ballot front, our law about allowing third parties to return people's voted ballots for counting (ten ballot maximum, with no way
of controlling how many one person actually carries for others) has got to go!
At that is just at the state level...
Cheers?
Margit
