REPUBLICAN WOMEN SAY YES TO VOTER-VERIFIED PAPER TRAILS

National Federation of Republican Women Supports Voting Machines with
Paper Audit Trails

Dear Colleague:

In October, the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) elected
its 2004/2005 leadership using electronic voting machines with
voter-verified paper trails. A survey conducted after the election
asked the NFRW members who voted the following question:

AccuPoll records your vote electronically and prints a paper Proof of
Vote to confirm your selections. Does this voter verified paper record
of your vote...

  * Make you feel more confident that your vote will be recorded
    accurately and will be counted
  * Seem unnecessary because you have full confidence in the
    electronic record

77% of those surveyed chose the first response, demonstrating that the
voter-verified paper trail can go a long way to increasing voter
confidence in our voting systems. Moreover, 97% of those surveyed
found the electronic machines with paper audit trails to be easy to
use.

Ensuring voter confidence in our election systems is not a partisan
issue. Republicans, Democrats, third party supporters, and
independents alike should all have the confidence of knowing that all
votes are recorded and counted properly. That is why I have introduced
H.R. 2239, The Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act of
2003, a bill to amend HAVA to require a voter-verified paper record
for all votes cast in federal elections. For more information, or to
become a cosponsor, please contact Bill Goold or Eric Gordon of my
staff at 5-5801.

Sincerely,

RUSH HOLT
