You might be interested in looking at Open Voting Consortium or the
Electronic Voting Machine Project. www.openvotingconsortium.org/
Both the same group of people. Non-profit. Providing less expensive machines
with open source software and printed ballots.
The group is made up of Computer scientists from around the world. The
hardware is based off of last generation PC's.
