CVV Legislative Efforts
Paul,
Can you please explain (and then retract) this paragraph from your
public comments to the Commissioners?
"Clearly there should be a legislative effort to change state laws
regarding re-counts. Last October members of my party and others asked
CVV and CVI members to work with the legislators to forward and author
such bills. Not only did they not help, but they have intentionally
hampered the progress of several bills in our state house. "
Not help? Intentionally hampered? I'd like to know who has been
misrepresenting facts to you. (Aside from the date and group origin
issues).
I don't recall seeing you at either of the House Committee hearings at
the State Legislature regarding HB1296 (the only bill on the calendar
that could have made a positive difference), where CVV and CVI members
testified on behalf of this legislation, and helped get it passed out
of the first one against the testimony of the State Elections Director
and others. Nor do I recall you being one of the people at the meeting
beforehand with Representative Madden to discuss the substance of the
legislation and issues with "audit trails" at the offices of Common
Cause. And I'm pretty sure you're not the one who got the strengthening
amendment added to the bill by Representative Shultheiss of Colorado
Springs, nor did you provide first hand assistance to the bill's
drafter (for Rep Madden), to both of which a CVV supporter provided
instrumental assistance.
I do however recall Boulder County's Clerk and Elections Manager
sitting silently in the back of the committee room the day the bill was
killed, instead of taking even one minute to speak up for the
legislation that clearly would have helped the unfortunate situation
with our state law, as I believe the people and the Commissioners would
have appreciated and had asked for, is that what you mean by "helpful"?
Since these statements are clearly factual errors that someone must
have relayed to you, I hope you will formally retract this portion of
your comment quoted above, for the record. You might also want to have
a conversation with whomever it was that misinformed you.
I'll be glad to provide additional info if you need it, including
meetings, testimony and specific actions taken in support of HB1296. I
do not know what "several" bills you are referring to, 1296 was the
only one that would have made a positive impact, although I believe CVV
members have also been actively in support of Senator Keller's
Resolution (SR04-10, I believe), and in opposition to HB1227, which
will further damage our state's election laws and systems and is on the
verge of enactment.
I welcome you to demonstrate your tangible efforts in support of
Trustworthy Elections, as well, I'm sure it will be of great interest
to voters contemplating your candidacy for County Commissioner, and
perhaps to your work at the County Elections Office, as well.
Joe
