One last note on this message.  Diebold's software did miscount Alameda
County's election.  But the example that I focused on in the first few
paragraphs was actually San Diego County's election; I had a personal
optical-scan bug reading the article text :-)

According to the full-text of the article (included at the bottom of the
original message), an optical-scan software bug transferred 9,000 votes in
Alameda County from Democrat ballots to the Socialist party.  A similar
bug in San Diego County transferred votes to Gephardt in the primary - he
had dropped out of the race, which is presumably what enabled the miscount
to be caught.
