RE: What's up for November

The commissioners with the help of CVV and the clerk's office decided not to
purchase any DREs until such time at there are standards for them. This was
done in early December of 03. No machines will be present in any polling
locations in this coming election.

Nick - what you have termed at the 'old system' is actually the new system.
Before color the dots this county used punch cards. Boulder was one of six
counties that used the Datavote card systems and those were made unlawful.
The only county that I know of that is still using them is JeffCo. They seem
to have gotten some kind of waiver from the state, though no one can explain
how that is possible under federal law.

In any case, color the dots - fill the squares, whatever you what to call it
is what BC uses now. Sometime in 2006 we can expect BC to start purchasing
electronic systems for voters. But don't bet on it.

Subject: What's up for November

Hopefully we have returned to civil discourse.

I voted yesterday in the primaries at Manhattan MS in Boulder. It was a
totally manual system: a pen used to fill out a paper ballot. Afterwards
I had a very nice discussion with the 3 officials who were there and I
asked them, "So are you going to have machines in here in November?" to
which they replied, "No, don't think so."

What gives? Are they misinformed, or are individual polling places still
allowed to use the "old" system? If so, how many of the polling places
in Boulder are going to. Not that it matters much to me; I've recently
moved to Arvada, where I'll be voting on an electronic box without a
paper receipt in November.
