RE: ERC meeting of Friday, March 18
There were a number of things that knocked me off my stool when listening to
Beat. He had no response to our issues over security, because we have this
nutty thing where only some people can vote. Our own prohibitionist ways
have gotten us into another fix where we have people that want to vote that
we want to put in prison for trying and where political parties can attempt
to control the electorate because they are a finite group.
90% of the crap that we do in elections in the US is to prevent people from
voting.
If everyone voted the elections would take a few hours - and the majority
would still win.
If ten year olds started complaining, let them vote too.

One really good point was made by the Chair, Mr. Lyons. He pointed
out that he has observed elections in three other countries. "If
you want to control an election, the point to do it is not during
the counting but during registration and canvassing," he said. He
asked that the activists pay attention to these issues as well.
Neal, to his credit, said to Mr. Lyons, "Yes, that's a very valid
point."
Ladies and Gentlemen, I ask you to please consider that "easy
registration" (i.e. motor voter, mail-in registrations,
"registration drives", etc.) are an invitation to screw the
electorate.
Evan responds:
Consider that most countries, at least in Europe, have automatic
voter registration. If you have a license, or pay taxes, you're
registered.
Consider that the Bill of Rights NEVER mentions 'citizens,' only
people and persons, and you have a good precedent for letting
everyone here vote. I'd put the age limit at 12, too.
I believe that Lyons was mostly referring to intimidation of people
to prevent them from registering, or tossing their registrations, as
happened here last year.
