RE: push for precinct voting?

Absolutely, we have something to say about voting centers.

           "Do not use voting centers."

Voting centers are far less transparent, verifiable, secure and accurate
than precinct voting.

-- Voting centers are a complex networked, real-time multiprocessing
application -- quite complex. The Clerk does not have the staff in house to
comprehend and manage this complex application.

-- There is no way for poll watchers to see what is going on. No way to see
the pollbook. No way to oversee eligibility testing. No way to compile
precinct pollbook data for "get-out-the-vote" activities.

-- The voting center depends on the idea of "ballot on demand".
Consequently there is no independent verification of ballot totals.

-- Voting centers must be linked electronically to a common voter
registration database. This opens the door to hacking.

-- Etc.

There is no scholarly work on Voting Centers.

Voting Centers do not foster a sense of community.

Voting Centers are harder to access.

Voting Centers are managed by staff (including temporary staff) and NOT
independent election judges.

Voting Centers can create long lines.

For those who prefer to not vote in their precinct on election day, we have
precinct voting and early voting. Early voting meets the needs of anybody
who would prefer a voting center.

And on, and on, and on ...

Subject: push for precinct voting?

Hi All,

This quote came from the end of Richard Valenty's article in the Monday
Colorado Daily:

"Liss said he couldn't reveal the lease cost per DRE until a bid has
been rewarded.

Also, he said the county has not yet officially decided whether to use
about 230 precinct polling places or roughly 40-50 regional vote centers
in the 2006 election, but should decide in the next several days."

It seems that we should weigh in with the Clerk's office, the parties,
and the media about precincts. Any ideas on this?
