Report of Montrose County Elections Taskforce

Secretary of State's Review of Montrose Election

February 21, 2007

Dear Citizens of Montrose County,

After the disappointing election process last November, the Montrose County Clerk's Election Team has been diligently working on addressing and resolving the difficulties that were encountered. In order to do this, the Board Of County Commissioners, in collaboration with the County Clerk and Recorder appointed an Election Fact Finding Task Force. This task force has been in place for the last two months and their recommendations are forthcoming. The Colorado Secretary of State's office will be submitting their review of findings and recommendations this week.   A work session will be scheduled with the County Clerk and Recorder, Secretary of State Voting Systems Specialist, John Gardner, and Board Of County Commissioners to discuss the report and implementation of their recommendations.

While we are awaiting these results we would like to inform Montrose County residents of the progress that has been made since November in solving some of the election issues:

Dear Montrose County Residents,

Hosting elections in a democratic society is one of the most fundamental responsibilities of government. We recognize that as Americans we enjoy an enormous privilege and right of being able to vote in free democratic elections. Insuring that the election is open, fair and accurate is of utmost importance and Montrose County takes this responsibility seriously. It is apparent that problems occurred in our most recent election and we are committed to identifying the problems and correcting them in a timely manner.

The Montrose Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) shares many of the same concerns expressed by the community regarding our recent elections process. Over the last week the BOCC and the County Clerk have been working diligently together to establish a plan for moving forward with identifying and resolving any issues associated with the election.
