Re "Denial of Service Attacks"

Hi All,
Here, in paragraph 4, is an example of what the experts say can happen with
internet registration and internet voting. (OpEd News is a progressive news
service.)

*We're now working on the new comment system, hopefully to be finished next
week. * It's a major re-do which will make it easier for editors to deal
with flags and also easier for members to post.

* We're working on improving your ability to embed video and images in
content.* We know there have been problems using youtube and other embed
codes. We'll soon have a list of sites we've white-listed where embed codes
from those sites will be allowed.

*A new fundraising approach-- donating THINGS. *I've set up an arrangement
with a local auction company so you can donate old books, jewelry coins,
collectibles, ephemera, old photos (100 years old or more) antiques, art
and the like to be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to OpEdNews.com.
Let us help you clear out your attic and garage. Please email me to let me
know what you have and to get an address to send it to. You WILL get a
receipt for your contribution.

*We have been dealing with a denial of service ATTACK on OEN.* It shut us
down for hours on Monday, slowed us down on Tuesday and is still ongoing.
We've taken steps to deal with it, but these attacks are insidious, using
virus infected computers from all over the world. We're being assaulted by
computers in China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Israel, Bulgaria, Brazil--
all over the world. It's taken up way too much of my time and wasted a lot
of users' time, causing lost submissions.

Best thing to do is do all your writing in a text editor, not on OEN. We
seem to have it somewhat under controlm, using a beefed up firewall. But
it's still not over. It's amazing it took this many years-- we're going to
celebrate our 6th birthday next month-- to be hit with one of these.

We're fighting on, keeping at all the issues we care about.

thanks for all you do,
rob kall

On
November 8, 2004, Artist and Political Essayist Andrew Wahl, penned his
thoughts on "Might." Then, the current war in Iraq may have been on his
mind. Fiscal policies that ruled in favor of the wealthy could have evoked
his visual essay. Way back then, religious factions, each of which was ready
to deem the others wrong, were engaged in combat. Today, all these realities
remain true.

The United States has unflinchingly adhered to its mantra of unguided
capitalism, despite the voluminous evidence showing our need for a better
policy. The United States has no delineated national goals or ambitions, and
it no longer supports its manufacturing industry in such a way that the
sector can remain globally competitive.

On 1st February this year the current legal Prime Minister Olmert of Israel
vowed to respond with 'disproportionate' force in response to Hamas rocket
attacks during a cabinet meeting. 'Disproportionate' force is currently
listed as a war crime. We can now expect Israeli defence forces to act with
'disproportionate' force at some time in the future. If we are silent we are
in effect condoning this future war crime.

The double standard used for Israel and Palestine is untenable. There is a
parallel between Tamils and Palestinians - still both situations have been
treated differently. The crisis in Sri Lanka was debated in Parliament -
very good -, but discussion of the situation of Palestinian civilians in
Gaza has been shut down in the name of the sacred "Israel's right to
defence."
