Swiss Voting System
Dear All,
MoveOn.org just asked its members to thank Senators Boxer and Reid for
speaking out yesterday in the Senate about the Ohio voting problems. I
took that opportunity to make the following request to these two senators:
"Please look into requiring the use of the Swiss Voting System of
color-coded, hand-counted ballots for all Federal elections. I just
saw a demonstration this week that was truly impressive. No computers!
For a given race, each candidate appears on a separate, uniquely
colored, currency-sized ballot. The voter casts the single ballot that
represents the candidate of the voter's choice. In a very open
process, humans by hand place the ballots in color-coded stacks to be
counted. The counting of the currency-sized ballots is done on
currency-type sheet-counting machines such as banks use. Very fast and
reliable. There are ways to accommodate multiple races in this system
and to accommodate referenda and other voter issues."
If you have a chance to encourage others at the Federal level to adopt
this system while the issue is hot, please do so. What we do in
Boulder is of little national significance by itself (unfortunately
for our fellow Americans). That doesn't mean that I don't hope for a
transparent system to be used here in March, however!
Thanks for all your efforts to improve our voting and vote counting.
All the best,
Mary
